  The plot involves an actor who contractually sells his career to a company who in turn builds a facsimile robot to perform in his place. However, the actor must never act again.

  That sounds like a mixed live-action/animated film from 2013 called The Congress, where an actress sells the rights to her digital image and agrees to never act again. That's just a sub-plot from the start of the movie.

  Thanks for the response. I'll follow up with your suggestion. However, the short story I'm seeking involves a male actor who surrenders his career to a robot which appears onstage.
